The five tabs and what each one is for

The options menu splits into Gameplay, Controls, Display, Graphics and Audio. Knowing which tab owns a problem saves more time than any individual setting, because two of the most common complaints live on tabs people never open.

Frame rate around big creations is a Gameplay problem, not a Graphics one, because Physics Quality sits under Gameplay. Sound that is too quiet is an Audio problem with six separate sliders, not one master volume. Both are covered below.

All 42 actions you can rebind

The Controls tab carries four category labels of its own: MOVEMENT, GAMEPLAY, HOTBAR and MISCELLANEOUS. Which label a given action sits under is not published, so the table below groups the 42 bindable actions by what they do rather than guessing at the game’s own filing.

Kind Actions
Moving Move Forward, Move Backward, Strafe Left, Strafe Right, Jump, Crouch, Sprint
Building and tools Build / Primary, Remove / Secondary, Use, Reload, Upgrade, Force Build, Next Rotation, Previous Rotation, Lift Up, Lift Down, Reset, Zoom In, Zoom Out
Hotbar Hotbar Item 1 to Hotbar Item 10, Next Hotbar Item, Previous Hotbar Item, Next Hotbar, Previous Hotbar, Select Hotbar 1, Select Hotbar 2, Select Hotbar 3
Screens Inventory, Logbook, Handbook, Chat, Hide Gui

The same tab carries Aim Sensitivity and an Inverted Y Axis toggle, which are settings rather than bindings.

How the rebinding screen behaves

Choosing an action opens a prompt that reads “Press any key or” your cancel key “to cancel.” Mouse buttons and the scroll wheel are valid targets, and the screen labels them LMB, RMB, Scroll Up and Scroll Down. An unassigned action shows as Not Set.

If the key you press is already in use, the game asks: “Binding currently assigned to” the other action, “Replace it?” Answer yes and the old action becomes Not Set rather than sharing the key, so check that you did not just unbind something you use.

One detail worth knowing: the game’s own instructions print your bindings, not the defaults. The pick-up tutorial and the build tutorial both insert whatever key you assigned rather than a fixed letter, so rebinding never leaves an on-screen prompt telling you to press the wrong thing.

Physics Quality, the setting that governs large builds

Gameplay holds Physics Quality, and the list is longer than most players expect:

  • Smart (Recommended)
  • Advanced
  • Simple 8, Simple 7, Simple 6, Simple 5, Simple 4, Simple 3, Simple 2, Simple 1

The game marks Smart as its recommendation in the option label itself. The Simple levels descend from 8 to 1, so Simple 1 is the far end of the scale.

If you are hunting stutter around a heavy vehicle or a busy base, this is the control to move first. Graphics settings change what is drawn; they do not change what is simulated. The blueprint analyzer can tell you how many joints and separate bodies a creation carries, which is the load Physics Quality is negotiating with.

The rest of the Gameplay tab is short: Difficulty with Easy and Normal, a Smart Hotbar toggle, and a Multiplayer visibility setting offering Public, Friends, Friends of Friends, Invite Only and Private.

Display and Graphics, split by what they cost

Display covers the window itself and the camera. Display Mode offers Borderless Fullscreen, Borderless Window, Exclusive Fullscreen (Not Recommended), Fullscreen and Windowed, with the game’s own opinion attached to one of them. Beside it are Resolution, Frame Rate Limit, Vertical Sync, FOV, Brightness and a Bright Color Profile.

The camera half of the tab is where quality-of-life lives: Vehicle Camera Mode with Follow Camera, Free Camera and Strict Follow Camera, plus Immersive Driving, Immersive Destruction, Compass Hud, Quest Tracker Hud, Pick Up Button Prompts and a Units switch between Imperial and Metric.

Graphics starts with a preset Level and then exposes every control individually. This is the whole set:

What it covers Controls
Detail Texture Quality, Texture Resolution, Texture Filtering, Shadow Quality, Shadow Resolution, Shader Quality, Reflection Quality, Particle Quality, Cloud Quality, Volumetric Lighting Quality, Draw Distance, Foliage Density, Voxel Tessellation
Effects Anti-Aliasing (Off, FXAA, SMAA Low, SMAA Medium, SMAA High, SMAA Ultra), SSAO, Bloom Effect, Depth of Field, Dynamic Lights, Godrays, Camera Shake, Immersive Camera
Resolution Resolution Mode (Fixed Resolution or Scaled Resolution), Resolution Scale, FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0 with Ultra Quality, Quality, Balanced and Performance modes plus a Sharpness slider
Dynamic scaling Dynamic Resolution Scaling, Minimum Resolution Scale, Maximum Resolution Scale, Target Frame Rate

Camera Shake and Immersive Camera live on this tab rather than under Display, which is where most people look for them first.

Reading the graphics list without guessing

No benchmark for these settings is published, so treat any ranked list of “the ones that matter” with suspicion, including one written here. What the labels do tell you is what each control governs. Draw Distance and Foliage Density decide how much world is drawn at once. Resolution Scale and FSR decide how much of the frame is rendered at full size before it is scaled up, and Dynamic Resolution Scaling does the same automatically, moving between the minimum and maximum you set to chase your Target Frame Rate. Camera Shake and Immersive Camera change presentation and nothing else, so they are safe to set by taste.

Change one setting at a time and watch the same creation in the same place. That is slower than copying somebody’s preset, and it is the only way to learn what your own machine is short of.

Audio, and the answer to “no sound”

The Audio tab has six sliders rather than one: Master, Music, Effects, Ambience, Interface and Speech. A game that seems too quiet is often a single slider that was moved, and a game with no voice lines is usually Speech alone.

All of these values are written to settings.json in your user folder. If a setting has gone somewhere you cannot get it back from, the save location guide has the path, and removing that file returns the options to their defaults.

Controls and settings questions

Where is the best Physics Quality setting?

The game labels Smart as its recommendation, and there is no published benchmark ranking the other levels. Move down the Simple scale only if you have a specific creation that stutters, and change one step at a time so you can tell whether it helped.

Can I rebind the mouse buttons?

Yes. The bind screen accepts mouse buttons and the scroll wheel, and shows them as LMB, RMB, Scroll Up and Scroll Down.

What happens if two actions share a key?

They cannot. The game asks whether to replace the existing binding, and the action that had the key becomes Not Set.

Why is my frame rate fine outdoors and bad next to my base?

Because the cost is physics rather than rendering. A creation with many joints and separate bodies is simulated whether or not you are looking at it, and in multiplayer every player in the session simulates everyone’s creations.

Does the game support a controller?

Steam publishes no controller support tag for it, so plan on mouse and keyboard.
