IN-GAME CHAT COMMANDS

Scrap Mechanic Chat Commands

Scrap Mechanic has a chat console with commands for giving items, stopping raids, freeing a stuck character and changing the time of day. Most of the Survival ones only appear once the game is started in developer mode. This page lists all of them, grouped by the mode they belong to.

46 commands across 3 game modes

How to turn on Survival commands

A normal Survival session registers only the two commands a host needs. The rest are developer commands, and the game adds them to the chat console when it is started with the -dev launch option.

  1. Close the game, then open your Steam library.
  2. Right-click Scrap Mechanic and choose Properties.
  3. On the General tab, find the Launch Options box.
  4. Type -dev into the box and close the window.
  5. Start the game and load or create a Survival world.

Press Enter to open the chat box, type a command starting with a slash, then press Enter again. The console autocompletes command names and, where the game ships a list of values, the values too.

  • /kick and /ban are the exception. They belong to whoever hosts the session and work without the launch option.
  • Creative needs no launch option. Its commands are registered for everyone in the session as soon as the world loads, and the two that wipe a world are reserved for the host.
  • The challenge commands only exist while you are building a challenge. They do not appear when you play one someone else published.

What the launch option changes about a world

The option does more than add commands to the console. A Survival world played with it on begins differently, and on a world you create while it is on the difference is hard to miss:

  • The opening quest chain does not start. With the option on, the game never begins the tutorial quest when the loading screen lifts, so the Logbook stays empty and the crash site steps never appear.
  • The opening cinematic is skipped, so the world simply starts.
  • A character joining for the first time gets different starting equipment: a fuller set of tools and items instead of the two the normal opening gives you.

None of that is a fault in your save, but it does mean the story does not start itself. If you want the campaign as it was written, create that world without the option and keep the developer one for a save you are experimenting with.

Before you use them

These are development tools, not a difficulty setting. They can hand you items you have not unlocked, delete every shape in a Creative world, or leave a Survival save in a state the story was not written for. Copy your save folder first if the world matters to you.

How to read the tables

<name>
An argument in angle brackets has to be typed. The command does nothing useful without it.
[name]
An argument in square brackets can be left out.
default
Where the game uses a set value for a missing argument, that value is shown next to the argument.
flips the setting when omitted
Some arguments flip the current setting when you leave them out, so typing the command twice returns to where you started.
accepts
Where the game accepts a fixed set of words, those words are listed and the chat console autocompletes them.
In-game description
The game prints these descriptions in English regardless of the language you play in, so they are reproduced here word for word.
